AEO, GEO, and AI visibility

AI search optimization for AEO, GEO, and AI visibility.

I help businesses get found, cited and described accurately in AI search, including Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. The work combines technical SEO, answer-first content and search data analysis.

AI Search Optimization Builds on SEO, Not Around It

AI search optimization builds on SEO rather than replacing it. It makes a business easy for AI search systems to find, understand and cite. It covers Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity. I build it on the same foundation as traditional SEO: pages that can be crawled, indexed and trusted.

The difference is the output. Traditional SEO competes for a ranked link. AI search writes an answer from several sources, and a business either appears in that answer or it doesn’t.

Two disciplines handle that shift. AEO, short for answer engine optimization, makes each page resolve a specific question clearly. GEO, short for generative engine optimization, checks how a brand’s facts hold up when a system compares sources and writes a response.

There is one more change: query fan-out. According to Google’s documentation, one question can trigger related searches for definitions, comparisons, risks and alternatives. A page that answers only the opening keyword can look relevant and still miss the rest of the decision.

But none of this replaces SEO. A page that can’t be crawled or trusted isn’t better prepared because it carries an AEO or GEO label.

The Six Disciplines Behind AI Search Visibility

AI visibility comes from the full chain — content that answers the question, technical access that exposes it, outside sources that back it up and data that shows whether it is working. No single tactic, schema type or writing format produces it on its own.
    How it works

    Step 1 · Discovery

Access Decides Whether a Page Is Even Considered

An AI system can only use what it can reach. Blocked crawlers, content hidden behind JavaScript, conflicting canonical tags or facts locked inside an interactive tool can all remove a page from consideration. I start by mapping which systems can reach which pages, and what blocks the rest.
    Step 2 · Retrieval

One Question Expands Into Many Hidden Searches

AI search rarely stops at the question a user types. One broad request can trigger extra searches for definitions, comparisons, evidence, limits and alternatives, and different wording surfaces different sources. I map the questions behind each topic and the page that should answer each one.
    Step 3 · Synthesis

    Generative Answers Blend Several Sources

Generative search combines several sources into one response. One page may supply a definition, another a comparison, a third an opposing view. No business controls that assembly, so the work focuses on what it can control: consistent facts and claims other sources support. I flag the conflicts and unsupported claims that need fixing.
    Step 4 · Measurement

Tracking AI Citations in Search Console and Bing

There is no single AI rank to report. Google Search Console has a Generative AI performance report, Bing Webmaster Tools reports AI citations and grounding queries, and ChatGPT referrals show up in analytics. I bring those sources together with prompt testing and conversion data, so reporting shows what AI visibility is actually worth.

AI Search Optimization Has Limits Worth Knowing

AEO and GEO improve the information AI systems have to work with. They don’t control how a platform picks sources, settles conflicting facts or writes its answer. So I separate the inputs I can change from the outcomes that have to be measured, not promised.

Content, Access, and Sources Can Be Improved

The controllable work happens before the answer is written: clear technical access, complete explanations, stable entity facts and claims backed by evidence. The same fixes strengthen traditional rankings and the experience of people who land on the site.

No One Can Guarantee AI Citations or Placement

AI platforms control their own answers. Models, sources, prompt wording, user context and product updates all change the response. No one can guarantee a citation, permanent inclusion or a specific description of your business — and any offer that does is a warning sign.

    AI Visibility Needs Ongoing Monitoring

AI answers change as prompts, sources and models change. A single citation proves only that one answer appeared once. Ongoing monitoring separates lasting visibility from one-off appearances and ties AI exposure to traffic quality and leads.

    AI Search Optimization FAQs

No. AEO and GEO build on SEO; they don't replace it. Crawlability, indexing, useful content, internal links, authority and clear site structure still decide whether a page is eligible at all. AEO adds a focus on answering questions directly. GEO adds a focus on how a brand is described when AI combines several sources.
No. A site can make its information clearer, easier to access and better supported. But the platform decides which sources appear in a response, and that choice shifts with the question, the user, the available sources and time. Treat any guaranteed-citation offer as a red flag.
With several data sources, not one rank. I track prompt-level mentions, cited sources, how accurately the brand is described, competitor visibility, referral traffic and conversions. Repeated checks matter more than a single screenshot, because each platform builds its answers differently.
